The short answer: where the sources agree
The printer Tom's Hardware and CNET both name, among machines we score, is the Bambu Lab A1 Mini. We score it 9.0/10, with ease of use at 9.5/10, about $299 (price checked Sep 2026), on an open 180 x 180 x 180 mm bed. The scorecard is the A1 Mini scorecard.
Tom's Hardware's budget list, last updated 10 August 2026, calls the A1 Mini the best budget multicolor alternative. The same publisher's best-of list, last updated 6 October 2026, uses the four-color A1 Mini as the example for colorful toys and games on a coffee table. CNET's guide, updated 27 July 2026, says of the A1 Mini Combo: "If you're unsure about 3D printing and want a cheap way to get started, this is the printer for you." James Bricknell also writes that the A1 Mini is great for children, with adult supervision.
They do not agree on one cheapest printer. The cheapest printer we score is the Creality Ender 3 V3 SE, 8.0/10 and about $199 (price checked Sep 2026). Tom's Hardware names it for budget beginners. CNET's July 2026 list does not. The cheapest printer both of those sources name is the A1 Mini. On the 10 August 2026 budget page, Tom's Hardware lists a standalone Mini at $199 and an AMS Lite combo at $349, and it also says the Mini debuted at $299. Our catalog price is still about $299.
Whose recommendations we used, and why (named, linked, dated)
Four written pages, each with a name, a link, and the date printed on the page. Marcus Hale is a byline on this site. He is not one of these reviewers, and this site's other bylines are not outside experts either.
Tom's Hardware, Best Budget 3D Printers 2026, by Anj Bryant, last updated 10 August 2026. It names the Ender 3 V3 SE as the best budget printer for beginners and the A1 Mini as the budget multicolor alternative. It also names the Sovol SV06 Ace as best budget overall and the Anycubic Kobra 3 V2 as best budget multicolor. We do not score those two models. The Kobra 3 V2 is not the Kobra 3 Combo on our scorecard.
Tom's Hardware, Best 3D Printers for Home, Workshop or Business in 2026, by Anj Bryant and Denise Bertacchi, last updated 6 October 2026. The overall pick is the Bambu Lab X2D, which we do not score. We use the page for the scored printers it actually names: the A1 Mini, the Ender 3 V3 SE, and the Prusa MK4S.
CNET, Best 3D Printer to Buy in 2026, by James Bricknell, updated 27 July 2026. His byline on that page says Managing Editor of Commerce. A note on the same page says "What we updated: August 2026" and that the Prusa Core One received a Lab Award. We do not score the Core One or CNET's P2S. We use the page for the A1 Combo, the A1 Mini Combo, the note that the P1S won CNET's best overall in 2023, and the Adventurer 5M Pro.
WIRED, Bambu P1S Combo review by Brad Bourque, Jan 25, 2026, scored 8/10. This is one printer, not a roundup. WIRED reviewed the P1S Combo, printer plus AMS. Our P1S scorecard is the P1S at about $549 (price checked Sep 2026), and it says combo pricing varies. AMS is optional on that card.
All four sources say they may earn a commission when you buy through their links: Tom's Hardware on both lists, CNET, and WIRED. None of them states a rate. Our Amazon buttons use the affiliate link already stored on each scorecard. We may earn a commission, and we do not set the price.
Printers these sources name, at a glance
These four are printers a named review recommends and that we already score. The role is where that review meets our catalog. It is not a second 2026 ranking.
Tom's Hardware budget, CNET beginner

Bambu Lab A1 Mini
$199 typical $219
The printer Tom's Hardware and CNET both name. Overall 9.0/10, ease of use 9.5/10, about $299 (price checked Sep 2026), open 180 x 180 x 180 mm bed. Tom's Hardware (10 August 2026) lists it as the budget multicolor alternative. CNET (27 July 2026) calls the Mini Combo a cheap way to start, including for children with an adult nearby. It is not the cheapest printer we score.
CNET's current buy

Bambu Lab A1 Combo
$359 Combo with AMS Lite, typical $399
CNET (27 July 2026) calls the A1 Combo the number one printer to buy right now, and the pick when the budget is smaller than the P2S. We score it 9.0/10, ease of use 9.4/10, about $399 (price checked Sep 2026), with AMS Lite included on an open 256 x 256 x 256 mm bed. Tom's Hardware's 6 October 2026 budget winner is the Kobra X, which we do not score.
Cheapest we score

Creality Ender 3 V3 SE
$179 regular $199
The cheapest printer we score: 8.0/10 and about $199 (price checked Sep 2026). Tom's Hardware (10 August 2026) calls it the best budget FDM printer for beginners. CNET's July 2026 list does not name it. Value on our scorecard is 9.5/10. Ease of use is 7.9/10.
Highest score we publish

Bambu Lab P1S
$349 typical $399, combo pricing varies
Our highest score, 9.3/10, about $549 (price checked Sep 2026), enclosed, 256 x 256 x 256 mm. WIRED's Jan 25, 2026 review of the P1S Combo scores that bundle 8/10 and calls it a great place to start. CNET says the P1S won best overall in 2023 and now points to the P2S, which we do not score. This card is the P1S. Combo pricing varies. It is not the Combo WIRED reviewed.
Recommendation table: printer, sources, our score
The score column is the overall score already on the FDM scorecard. It is not the reviewer's score. The only reviewer score in this set is WIRED's 8/10 for the P1S Combo, which is a different listing from our P1S card.

|---|---|---|
| Bambu Lab A1 Mini | Tom's Hardware budget list (10 August 2026): budget multicolor alternative. Tom's Hardware best-of list (6 October 2026): coffee-table color example. CNET (27 July 2026): cheap way to start, and for children with an adult nearby. | 9.0/10. About $299 (price checked Sep 2026). |
| Creality Ender 3 V3 SE | Tom's Hardware budget list (10 August 2026): best budget printer for beginners. The same page writes a $199 retail price and also lists a $219 MSRP and a $169 sale. Tom's Hardware best-of list (6 October 2026) lists it as best budget FDM 3D printer alternative. CNET's July 2026 list does not name it. | 8.0/10. About $199 (price checked Sep 2026). Cheapest printer we score. |
| Bambu Lab A1 Combo | CNET (27 July 2026): CNET labels it best overall beginner 3D printer. "the A1 Combo is the number one printer to buy right now." CNET also describes four-color printing for less than $700. Tom's Hardware does not give the Combo this slot. | 9.0/10. About $399 (price checked Sep 2026). AMS Lite included. |
| Bambu Lab P1S | WIRED (Jan 25, 2026): P1S Combo, 8/10, "the easiest to use 3D printer I've ever tried." CNET says the P1S won best overall in 2023 and now points to the P2S, which we do not score. | 9.3/10. About $549 (price checked Sep 2026). Combo pricing varies. Not WIRED's Combo listing. |
| Original Prusa MK4S | Tom's Hardware best-of list (6 October 2026): "High-precision prototyping requires a 3D printer like the Prusa Original MK4S." Their premium pick on that page is the Prusa CORE One, which we do not score. | 9.1/10. About $899 (price checked Sep 2026). Value 7.6/10. |
| Flashforge AD5M Pro | CNET (27 July 2026): CNET's label is best 3D printer for educators, for the Adventurer 5M / 5M Pro. "I really like the Adventurer 5M Pro for schools." CNET groups the Adventurer 5M and the 5M Pro. Our card is the Pro. | 8.2/10. About $389 (price checked Sep 2026). |
Where the sources disagree
Tom's Hardware's 6 October 2026 overall pick is the Bambu Lab X2D. CNET writes, "The P2S is probably the best 3D printer you can buy right now," and says the P1S won CNET's best overall in 2023. We do not score the X2D or the P2S. Our highest published score is the P1S at 9.3/10. That number is ours. It is not their current overall winner.
On the same CNET page, a smaller budget points to the A1 Combo and a larger budget points to the P2S. Tom's Hardware's 6 October 2026 budget slot is the Anycubic Kobra X, which we do not score. In that section they timed a Bambu Lab A1 as slower at color swaps than the Kobra X. We do not score a bare full-size A1. The full-size open Bambu we score is the A1 Combo, 9.0/10, about $399 (price checked Sep 2026), AMS Lite included.
Tom's Hardware's beginner slot on the 6 October 2026 list is the Creality SPARKX i7, which we do not score. The budget list, updated 10 August 2026, still says: "The Creality Ender 3 V3 SE is simply the best budget FDM 3D printer you can buy today."
WIRED, on Jan 25, 2026, calls the P1S Combo "a great place to start" if you have projects in mind. CNET's July 2026 page treats the P1S as the previous overall winner. Those are different claims about different years, and only WIRED's claim is about the Combo.
Picks by need: beginner, enclosed, multi-color
Beginner: there is no shared winner. Tom's Hardware's budget list names the Ender 3 V3 SE, and its main list names the SPARKX i7, which we do not score. CNET labels the A1 Mini Combo best 3D printer for beginners and the A1 Combo best overall beginner 3D printer. Our budget split, which is a different page, is the best printer for beginners.
Enclosed: WIRED recommends the P1S Combo. Our P1S score is 9.3/10 and the scorecard lists an enclosed CoreXY. CNET's current top on that page is the P2S, which we do not score. CNET also likes the Adventurer 5M Pro for schools. We score the AD5M Pro at 8.2/10, about $389 (price checked Sep 2026). Best enclosed on our 2026 ranking is still the P1S. This page does not move that slot.
Multi-color: CNET's A1 Combo line is the strongest "buy this" for color among printers we score. Tom's Hardware's budget multicolor winner is the Kobra 3 V2, with the A1 Mini as the alternative, and the main list's multicolor winner is the Snapmaker U1. We do not score those. Our 2026 multi-color slot remains the A1 Combo.

How our scoring compares with theirs
A1 Mini: the sources and our 9.0/10 agree that it is a real recommendation. Our ease of use is 9.5/10. Neither Tom's Hardware nor CNET publishes a 9.0 for it. Do not mix their words with our number.
Ender 3 V3 SE: Tom's Hardware's 10 August 2026 budget list agrees it is the beginner budget pick. Our value score is 9.5/10 and overall is 8.0/10. CNET does not give it that slot. "Cheapest" here means the cheapest printer we score, and the budget beginner name on that Tom's Hardware list. It does not mean every reviewer picked it.
A1 Combo: CNET's "number one" is a stronger current buy than our 9.0/10, which ties the A1 Mini. Our 2026 page gives multi-color to the Combo and beginner to the Mini. CNET uses the Combo as the main buy and the Mini Combo as the cheap start.
P1S: 9.3/10 is the highest overall we publish. WIRED scores the Combo 8/10 and still recommends it. CNET has moved its overall slot to the P2S. The two scores are not the same listing and not the same scale. The MK4S scorecard is 9.1/10 at about $899 (price checked Sep 2026), with value at 7.6/10. Tom's Hardware points at the MK4S for precision work, then names the CORE One as best premium. We do not score the CORE One, so 9.1/10 is not their premium winner.
AD5M Pro: 8.2/10. CNET's school comment is a narrower job than an overall score. It does not make the AD5M Pro our best enclosed printer.
Who should skip these printers
Skip this page if you want one 2026 winner
Our 2026 ranking gives best overall and best enclosed to the P1S at 9.3/10. Tom's Hardware's 6 October 2026 overall pick is the Bambu Lab X2D. CNET's current overall line is the P2S. We do not score either of those.
Skip the A1 Mini if the part will not fit 180 mm
The bed is 180 x 180 x 180 mm. CNET says to look at the full-size A1 when that bed is too small. We do not score a bare full-size A1. The open 256 mm machine we score is the A1 Combo.
Skip a machine we do not score if you need our number
The X2D, P2S, Prusa CORE One, Creality SPARKX i7, Anycubic Kobra X, Anycubic Kobra 3 V2, Sovol SV06 Ace, and Snapmaker U1 have no score in this catalog. The Kobra 3 V2 is not the Kobra 3 Combo we score.

- What is the best 3D printer to buy for home use?
- No single home pick. Tom's Hardware's home list (6 October 2026) names the Bambu Lab X2D overall, which we do not score. CNET calls the A1 Combo the number one printer to buy right now. We score that Combo 9.0/10 at about $399 (price checked Sep 2026). WIRED (Jan 25, 2026) calls the P1S Combo a great place to start. - Do reviewers recommend a different 3D printer for kids?
- CNET recommends the A1 Mini for children with an adult nearby, and likes the Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro for schools because the shell keeps fingers out. We score the A1 Mini 9.0/10 and the AD5M Pro 8.2/10 at about $389 (price checked Sep 2026). A door is not supervision. The kids and STEM guide is the page for that job.
